…and I’ll keep having more as life goes on!
Maybe not as catchy as the original version, but definitely more accurate! On Day 7 of my meditation challenge, the short lesson prior to the actual meditation (using Sam Harris’ Waking Up app) focused on Solving Problems.
Have you ever listened to or read about something that is clearly common sense and a concept everyone should know but you’ve never encountered it laid out so simply and clearly…and you are left there with your head slightly tilted to the side and your mouth wide open going: “HOLY SHIT! Duh!”
Problems. We all got ’em. Yet somehow, those of us fortunate enough to lead lives of privilege in first-world countries are often conditioned to believe that if we just work hard enough to get the right fancy job (along with the right fancy car, the right fancy house and the right FANCY spouse) – we will somehow glide into a problem-less existence full of constant merriment and cheer (and a constant stream of brunch and mimosas).
But as Sam Harris clearly states in this short but very important lesson: “Life is about solving problems.” You will never get to a place where problems are gone – they are not anomalies – and it is this expectation of a problem-free existence that leads to suffering.
Instead of hoping/wishing/expecting a problem-free life (hint: not happening!), a worthier use of time is to meditate and train your mind to be able to deal with them more gracefully when they inevitably arrive.
*insert head tilt and open-mouth moment of realization*
My Week 1 update on my 30-day meditation challenge coming tomorrow! Stay tuned.
Current status: almost done Michelle Obama’s book (so so so so much love for it) / prepping for a photo session on Sunday (wee!) / wondering what next month’s challenge should be?
